The "China-Saudi Embroidery Training Residency Program" was held in Suzhou from June 18 to 28, 2025, bringing together a delegation of Saudi artists and Suzhou embroidery masters for a ten-day immersive exchange and collaboration. This groundbreaking initiative marked not only the first time the Saudi Ministry of Culture has systematically dispatched artists to China to study traditional Chinese crafts but also represented the inaugural effort to conduct a structured cultural dissemination of China’s intangible cultural heritage--embroidery to Saudi Arabia, holding profound pioneering significance. As a flagship event under the "2025 Saudi-China Culture Year," the program received guidance from the Heritage Commission of the Ministry of Culture of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and strong support from the Suzhou Municipal Government and relevant departments.
The program was structured around four progressive stages—"learning, experiencing, collaborating, and disseminating"—establishing a systematic and comprehensive pathway for cultural exchange. Under the guidance of Ms. Lu Fuying, a master inheritor of Suzhou embroidery , and her team, the Saudi artists systematically studied the history and techniques of Suzhou embroidery and acquired core stitching methods through hands-on training. Building on this foundation, Chinese and Saudi artists jointly created four symbolic embroidery works under the theme "Four Symbols, Dual Origins," blending traditional Chinese motifs with Arabic patterns and employing a variety of Suzhou embroidery stitches. These pieces not only reflect the artistic resonance between the two civilizations but have also been incorporated into the Ministry of Culture of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s global touring exhibition plan and will be permanently housed in Saudi national-level galleries.
The program achieved the dual objectives of skill transmission and cultural mutual learning, vividly demonstrating the practical significance of "people-to-people bonds." It has set an exemplary model for promoting Chinese intangible cultural heritage, such as Suzhou embroidery, on the international stage, laid a solid foundation for mechanized cooperation between China and Saudi Arabia in the field of intangible cultural heritage, and stands as a significant achievement in the exchange and mutual appreciation of the two civilizations.
